CBD products are all the rage right now, and for a good reason. The recent legalization of industrial hemp at the federal level with the 2018 Farm Bill has led to an increase in production and demand for CBD products. With so many options now available — from CBD oil to CBD bath bombs — you may be wondering if you can take multiple CBD products at once. The answer? Yes, yes, you can! But it’s essential to monitor your intake carefully so that you get the best experience and results possible from each product. 

 

What’s CBD, and Where Can It Be Found?

Just in case you didn’t know, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp. It can be ingested, taken sublingually or applied to the skin as a cream. CBD is found in many forms, including liquids, sprays and topicals. CBD works by interacting with your endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS has been researched for its ability to regulate many of our vital bodily functions, such as mood, digestion, pain, immune function and sleep. 

Natural cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids, are also part of the ECS. They are produced within the body to regulate these physiological processes. CBD, a plant-based cannabinoid, works by interacting with two receptors in the ECS known as cannabinoid receptors. You’ll see them mentioned in CBD articles as CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are found all over our body, but most densely in specific regions of the brain and central nervous system. 

When a person ingests or applies CBD, it can act as either an antagonist or an agonist to these receptors. CBD interacts with these receptors by affecting neurotransmitter release and blocking other chemical messages from getting through to their intended destination. If that sounds a bit complicated, don’t stress about it. Just think about it like this. CBD is having a little chat with your body, and it’s phoning in via the CB1 and CB2 receptors. 

How Much CBD Should You Take?

When it comes to combining CBD products, it’s crucial to think about how much CBD you should be taking daily. This depends entirely on the product you are taking. First, you need to separate topicals from anything you ingest or take sublingually (under your tongue). For example, using a CBD cream versus taking CBD capsules

When it comes to topicals, you can apply them as often as needed. That’s because the CBD in creams works locally and doesn’t enter your bloodstream or system much — if at all. They’re perfect for soothing sore muscles or achy joints, but that’s as far as their job goes. When you start eating CBD products like gummies or capsules or using CBD drops, you need to keep track. 

The serving size needed can also depend on your weight and height and how many products you combine. How much CBD one person should take is variable. If you’re new, a smaller serving size like 20 to 30 mg per day could be good. You can increase that by 5 to 10 mg after a week and so forth. Different factors such as body size, level of fitness, metabolism and age can all play a role in what serving size is ideal for you. But if you’re using a combination of drops, capsules and/or gummies, it’s best to take note of that.


 

This goes for pet CBD products as well! When it comes to using CBD oil for pets and something like calming CBD dog treats, you’ll want to be mindful that you don’t go overboard. It’s extra important with fur kids because they can’t monitor how they’re feeling, like you can, and they have a lesser body weight.

Are There Side Effects of Taking Too Much CBD?

Not really. Sometimes we read an article, like how to use CBD oil for pain, and then get really excited. Unfortunately, it may lead to being a little overzealous and taking more CBD than your body is used to. Some people may experience more side effects than others, but the list of these side effects is often the same. For example, some people report feeling as if they are lethargic, while others think that they are too stimulated. Other side effects of excessive CBD use may include diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth and changes in appetite.

Don’t be too worried, though. Researchers in one study administered 1500 mg of CBD per day to patients with no significant adverse effects. And this is way beyond anything you’d ever take yourself. So don’t sweat it if you take an extra 5 or 10 mg by mistake one day!
